Sorbitol

Sorbitol or Glucitol is a sugar alcohol that is slowly metabolized in the human body. Sorbitol is used in powder form as a laxative. Sorbitol is obtained from the reduction of glucose, by substituting the hydroxyl group for the aldehyde group. Sorbitol is found in black plums, apples, pears and peaches.
This substance is used as a sweetener, humectant, improver, texture maker, preservative, non-clumping agent in the food industry. It is also used as a substitute for sugar in a number of foods, including low-calorie and sugar-free foods, as well as pharmaceutical and oral health products, such as toothpaste and chewing gum.
